This is a page about Imperian, the game. My character in Imperian is known as Tsonn Reopev. He's an Idras, which means he's a sneaky, toxin-using, knife-wielding assassin type.
I'm a big fan of combat in Imperian, so, I think that's what I'll talk about here.
An Introduction To Imperian Combat
First off, if you have no idea at all what Imperian is, you should go and play it so you know what I'm talking about.
That out of the way, combat in Imperian revolves around three things: health levels, afflictions, and "insta-kills".
Health levels are obvious. If you run out of health, you die. Hitting the other person for long enough, or otherwise hurting them, may lead to this happening. It isn't hugely interesting.
Afflictions are the core of Imperian combat. Your character can be afflicted with paralysis, stupidity, pacifism, confusion, broken limbs... the full list is huge. Each affliction has some nasty effect, typically blocking or restricting actions. A range of cures are available. Before you can be good at combat, you must learn to be good at curing.
Finally, any method of killing without reducing someone's health to zero is known as an insta-kill. Each requires a certain amount of setting up; for example, to behead someone the target must be prone, bound, or otherwise restricted. You then need to spend several uninterrupted seconds performing the behead. Most classes have at least one insta-kill, and so learning to avoid them while learning to use them yourself is crucial.
